California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) gave residents an optimistic message while announcing a decline in coronavirus cases. On Monday, the Democrat governor said the seven day average of hospitalizations dropped by 10-percent and ICU admissions dropped by five-percent.
The numbers are a weekly average, which is a more reliable metric than daily cases as it fluctuates less. The governor said he hopes they are part of a longer trend of declining infections.

Newsom highlighted the steep decline in positive diagnoses, which came even as testing rates in the state have continued to increase.
“That seven day average, by the way, is down roughly 21.2% from the previous seven day average,” he stated. “That’s good news — a 21.2% decline.”
Meanwhile, Newsom reminded residents some areas of the state continue to be hot-spots for the virus. He noted that people should continue to exercise caution and abide by public health guidelines.
