President Trump has announced his administration will stop funding 13 coronavirus testing sites. On Wednesday, the administration released its plan to end the funding by June 30th.
According to a Health and Human Services (HHS) Department official, the government is not shutting down the testing facilities, but will cease to provide financial assistance to them.
Assistant HHS Secretary Admiral Brett Giroir has said it is time for these 13 sites to transition into conducting newer methods of testing. He also noted the Trump administration is increasing their testing efforts.
“Neither the president nor anyone in the administration has instructed or suggested that we should do less testing,” he stated. “We are proceeding in just the opposite, we want to do more testing of higher quality.”
Seven of the 13 testing centers that will no longer receive funding are located in Texas.
