Texas Senator Ted Cruz voiced his frustration on the Senate floor on Wednesday evening after Democrat Senator Cory Booker objected to a bipartisan bill sponsored by Cruz that would crack down on fake revenge porn generated by artificial intelligence.

The denial by Booker (D-N.J.) is a sign that Democrats don’t want to give legislative victories to Republicans prior to Election Day.

The Take It Down Act, which is a Cruz-sponsored bill, appeared headed for passage as part of a routine legislative wrap-up session before Congress leaves Washington for a six week recess before the 2024 presidential election.

The bill was also sponsored by Democrat Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.).

The New Jersey Democrat did not provide any reason for the objection, prompting Cruz to become frustrated.

“I am saddened that the senator from New Jersey chose to give no explanation for his objection,” Cruz said, pointing out that Booker’s New Jersey colleague Francesca Mani had testified before the Commerce Committee about the dangers of deep fake revenge porn.

“He chose to give no reason to Francesca why she’s being denied,” Cruz said after Booker objected.

The Texas senator maintained that politics played a part in Booker’s objection.

“It’s not lost on anyone that this is an election year, and I will say absent a single substantive objection, the obvious inference is that this objection is being made because we’ve got an election in less than six weeks,” he fumed.

Cruz is running for re-election against Booker’s ally Colin Allred (D-Texas.), which polls have shown will be a tight race in November.
