Ohio senator and GOP nominee for vice president, JD Vance, has been preparing for his upcoming debate with Democrat vice presidential nominee Tim Walz by working with Rep. Tom Emmer, who has taken on the role of imitating Walz while giving Vance back-and-forth responses of what he might say.

According to sources familiar with the matter, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn) is assisting Vance (R-Ohio) in his preparation for the debate with Walz (D-Minn.), standing in for the Minnesota governor.
The New York Times reported that Emmer was chosen since he can easily emulate Walz’s “folksy style,” as both men are from the same state, in addition to Emmer being more educated on Walz’s background as a politician.
Emmer had previously run for Speaker last fall as Republicans searched for a replacement for Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). However, his bid was rejected in part by former President Trump, who maintained that Emmer was a “Globalist RINO.” The acronym “RINO” stands for “Republican In Name Only,” a criticism that many conservatives use to describe another politician who claims to be Republican, while their policies and personal perspectives convey otherwise.
However, Emmer and Trump have now made amends. Back in March, Trump attended a fundraiser hosted by Emmer at Mar-a-Lago, mending the “longtime rift” between the two.
“Emmer has [also] raised more than $15 million for House Republicans in the 2024 cycle,” Axios reported.
As for Walz’s preparations for the debate, Democrat Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will be playing the role of JD Vance in their simulated back-and-forth practice debate.
“I’ll make myself useful in any way I can, but I’m still recovering from the experience of trying to inhabit the mind of Mike Pence in order to play that role,” Buttigieg said.
The vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz will air on CBS News on October 1st.
