A runner died suddenly after crossing the finish line at Disneyland’s Halloween Half Marathon, with theories circulating that the California “heat wave” was to blame.

However, others have also expressed skepticism in regards to the heat wave claim.
On Sunday, 35-year-old Bobby Graves, who went by his middle name, Caleb, successfully reached the finish line of the event on Sunday, but he collapsed shortly after while clutching his chest.
Anaheim’s Police Sgt. Matt Sutter spoke to the outlet the Los Angeles Times, explaining that a volunteer managed to catch him before he collapsed.
“The race started at 5 AM, I don’t know what start wave he was in but he crossed the finish line at approximately 7 AM,” Sutter said. “As soon as he crossed the finish line, he started grabbing his chest. One of the workers noticed and ran up to him and caught him before he collapsed.”
“Fire and rescue personnel were right there on the scene,” Sutter tells PEOPLE. “Emergency services could not have been there any faster,” he added.
One day prior to his passing, Graves said in an uploaded TikTok video that he had gone outside to walk his dog, but then passed out from heat exhaustion.
“I really hope I get through the race tomorrow morning,” he says at the end of the clip.
Graves had no known medical conditions prior to his untimely death, according to Sutter, who also told The Times that the coroner’s office is still looking into what exactly prompted his cardiac arrest.
In 2023 and 2024, long-distance runner Graves was able to finish the full and half marathon races at Disney World.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and our hearts are with Caleb’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Jessica Good, Disneyland Resort spokesperson, said in an emailed statement to KTLA.
Graves had over 18,000 followers on TikTok. He often used the platform to document his trips to Disney and Universal theme parks, he gave helpful tips to runners, and shared details of his daily life.
Back in 2019, another runner also passed away during a runDisney event, collapsing while running in the Walt Disney World Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend 5K.
