The top photo was of the rifle that gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks used in the shooting. It killed firefighter rally goer, Corey Comperatore. Additionally, it injured Trump and two others in the crowd.
FBI officials released the images amidst their investigation into the motive behind the shooter, largely relying on his internet searches in an attempt to piece together possible narratives.
The photo of the firearm showcases the collapsible stock, along with a bag which may have been used to conceal the firearm at the site of the rally.
The FBI also released images of Crooks’s trunk with two “improvised explosive devices” which had several problems in their construction.
Finally, the FBI released an image of an air conditioning unit which they believe Crooks used to access the roof, where he perpetrated the Butler rally shooting.
Along with the images released, FBI Special Agent Kevin Rojek spoke to the media, giving an update into the extensive ongoing investigation.
“We’ve conducted nearly 1,000 interviews, served numerous search warrants, issued dozens of subpoenas, and analyzed hundreds of hours of video footage,” Rojek stated.
The update also gives new insight into Crooks’s mindset as he prepared for an attack.
“From April of 2024 through July 12, the subject searched campaign events for both former President Trump and President [Joe] Biden, including events scheduled to take place in western Pennsylvania,” Rojek added. “In the 30 days prior to the attack, the subject conducted more than 60 searches related to President Biden and former President Trump. Of particular note, our investigation identified specific searches conducted on July 5 to include ‘when is the DNC Convention’ and ‘when is the RNC in 2024.’”
Additionally, the statement claims that there has not been any evidence pertaining to any co-conspirators foreign, or domestic.
The press release concludes by stating that the FBI “continues to work diligently to determine the subject’s motive,” as well as “continue to pursue all investigative leads to determine any possible links to co-conspirators.”
