Her publicist, Pierre Lehu, confirmed Westheimer’s passing on Friday; however, no cause of death was released.
Born in 1928 in Germany, the sex therapist survived the Holocaust and moved to the U.S. in 1956 when she was 28 years old.
She worked in academia for many years before becoming well-known in 1980 thanks to the radio program “Sexually Speaking” on New York’s WYNY network.
The star shot to fame with her candid advice on intimacy, which helped de-stigmatize sex for a whole generation of Americans.
Westheimer transitioned from radio to television during her success there, beginning as host of “The Dr. Ruth Show” in 1983.
Over the next few decades, she wrote over 45 books, many of which were best-sellers, and hosted a number of other TV shows.
Governor Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) named her the state’s honorary ambassador to loneliness just a year ago.
She is survived by her two children and four grandchildren.
