Hunter Biden has defied his scheduled closed-door deposition on Capitol Hill with the House Oversight Committee.

Hunter instead delivered a public statement on Wednesday outside of Capitol Hill, claiming the investigation into his business dealings is a move to undermine his father’s tenure as president.

“I’m here today to acknowledge that I’ve made mistakes in my life,” he said, flanked by his lawyer and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), “but I’m also here today to correct how the MAGA Right has portrayed me for their political purposes.”

“For six years, I’ve been the target of the unrelenting Trump attack machine shouting, where’s Hunter?” he added. “Here’s my answer, I’m right here.”

Hunter has said he wants to testify at a public hearing to answer questions from House Republicans because in private could give way to selective leaks.

This comes after Republicans have rejected Hunter Biden’s offer to appear for an initial public hearing, saying they want him to testify privately first.

The inquiry is investigating the Biden family as a whole. First, whether President Biden used his power for financial gain for himself and his family, whether President Biden used his power in office to influence the Department of Justice to help Hunter avoid criminal charges, and how Hunter was involved in the family’s business dealings.

Meanwhile, Hunter faces tax evasion charges, as well as a separate gun charge by special counsel David Weiss.

Additionally, Hunter said his father was not involved in any of his business dealings. “Not as a practicing lawyer, as a board member of Burisma not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home nor abroad and certainly not as an artist,” he said.

“But to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd. It’s shameless,” he said. “There’s no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business.”

The Oversight and Judiciary panels didn’t know on Tuesday night if Hunter would show up for the closed-door deposition.

The House is set to vote on Wednesday to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.
