“Our officers remain at the scene carrying out inquiries, and our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing,” authorities said on Monday.

“We would encourage the public to avoid speculation regarding the incident while we continue our inquiries,” the department continued.

Johnson, a resident of Hibbing on Minnesota’s Iron Range, was struck in the neck by opposing player Matt Petgrave’s skate blade as he was skating up the ice. Paramedics treated Johnson on the ice immediately following his injuries.

Reporters on the scene also said that other players surrounded Johnson in a circle before 8,000 spectators were ordered to vacate the premises.

Johnson was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Many online users who watched the footage taken during the incident pointed fingers at Petgrave and asserted that he should be arrested immediately, maintaining that his leg raise towards Johnson’s jugular was purposeful.
