On Tuesday, a mother went in for a visit at Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD for a visit. It is reported that she had her two kids with her but only took the 4-year-old with her, leaving behind the infant in the hot car.
By the time she came back, the 3-month-old baby was not breathing anymore. She took him inside the mental health facility, where nurses tried to perform CPR.
Houston police and fire department first responders eventually arrived on the site and made additional life-saving efforts. The child was subsequently taken to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Houston Police Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir called the incident an “avoidable” tragedy while highlighting that the recklessness of the mother was something that “should never [have] happen[ed].”
“Houston gets very hot and under no circumstances you should leave a child in a car, not even for a moment,” said Bashir. “Especially an infant or a child, the body temperature goes up very quickly.”
The Harris County medical examiner is reported to make an autopsy soon. It is not clear if any charges have been filed or how long the infant was left alone for.
