Just before noon on Friday, police were called to the scene of gunshots on a bridge over the Anacostia River on Bladensburg Road, 40 miles east of Washington, D.C.

Tyrone Collington, head of the Bladensburg Police Department, said at a press conference that the five victims were given life-saving care by emergency personnel at the scene before being brought to a hospital.

According to Collington, authorities have not yet identified any suspects, and he pleaded with passing drivers for assistance. He also stated that they are looking for surveillance video.

Collington also said that in order to determine a potential motivation, authorities were looking into whether the suspects had attended the same funeral.

“At this time, I can’t confirm that it was road rage or not,” Collington said. “We are still working through it.”

“There was not an exchange (of gunfire) between the two vehicles. It was one vehicle that was shot at and struck multiple victims within that vehicle,” Collington continued.

Assisting in the investigation, officials with the Edmonston Police Department stated they thought the gunshot was an isolated event and didn’t constitute a continuing threat.
