Daniel Penny, the Marine veteran charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Jordan Neely, recently sat down for an interview with the New York Post where he gave his first remarks since the incident on May 1st.

In the interview with the New York Post, Penny insisted that he regrets the loss of life and that the incident had nothing to with race, that it was the consequences of a broken system that has “so desperately failed us.”

“This had nothing to do with race,” the 24-year-old said. “I judge a person based on their character. I’m not a white supremacist.”

“I’m deeply saddened by the loss of life,” he added. “It’s tragic what happened to him. Hopefully, we can change the system that’s so desperately failed us.”

Penny went on to explain that anyone who has ever met him knows that he is not what the media is portraying him as, and he has “love for all people.” He also said that he is not a vigilante, Penny said that he is just a “normal person” but that he will always do what he thinks is right.

“I mean, it’s, it’s a little bit comical,” he said. “Everybody who’s ever met me can tell you, I love all people, I love all cultures. You can tell by my past and all my travels and adventures around the world. I was actually planning a road trip through Africa before this happened.”

He went on to say that since the incident happened, he has been surrounded by family and friends, and explained that his family has been supporting him.

“My mom is OK,” he said. “My sisters understand. They all support me.”

The Marine veteran was traveling on the F train on his way to the gym at the time of the incident. Thomas Kenniff, Penny’s attorney, said that the passengers on the train would support the veteran’s actions that day because Neely had been acting in a threatening and menacing manner, terrorizing the passengers.

“The threats, the menacing, the terror that Jordan Neely introduced to that train has already been well documented,” Kenniff said. “There are numerous witnesses from all different walks of life who have absolutely no motive to do anything other than to recount what actually happened. They are uniform in their recollection of events.”

The attorney representing Jordan Neely’s family, Donte Mills, responded to the interview by releasing a statement which was obtained by Fox News.

“This is an advertisement to soften the public’s view of Daniel Penny who choked Jordan Neely to death,” he said. “We never called him a white supremacist, we called him a killer. We don’t care how many vacations he’s been on. We want to know why he didn’t let go of that chokehold until Jordan was dead. Next time ask him why he didn’t let go when the passengers he was supposedly protecting were screaming ‘let him go, you’re going to kill him and get a murder charge.’ Your planned drive through Africa can’t explain why you thought you had the right to take someone’s life even if they were houseless and had mental illness.”

Penny was arraigned on second-degree manslaughter charge and released on $100,000 bail.
