A top Obama-era immigration official has revealed that Illegal migrants are taking advantage of the United States asylum system.
According to former Director of ICE John Sandweg, the United States can not handle the number of asylum claims at our nation’s borders.
As part of the process, migrants seeking asylum are permitted to stay in the U.S. until a judge decides whether their claim is credible. However, the process takes years because of the limited number of judges. Due to this, many migrants remain in the U.S. and many do not appear for their court date.
Sandweg claimed that the asylum system is inadequate.
“Under longstanding U.S. law, if you enter the United States, even illegally, and you get two feet on American soil and you make a creditable claim to asylum, you cannot be deported or removed unless and until an immigration judge determines that you claim is not creditable or doesn’t meet the standard for asylum,” Sandweg said.
Sandweg went on to say that there’s two million back-logged asylum cases and only 600 judges.
He added that the Biden administration has no long-term plan to deal with the influx of claims.
