Hospitals nationwide are overwhelmed by unseasonably high numbers of respiratory illnesses in children.
One of the affected hospitals, Connecticut Children’s is reportedly so overwhelmed by pediatric Respiratory Syncytial Virus cases, that it is considering setting up temporary tents on their front lawn.
RSV can cause cold-like symptoms and lung inflammation in mild instances. In severe cases, it can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia.
Reports indicate more than 70% of pediatric hospital beds across the country are full due to the surge in cases. Hospitals in California, Illinois, North Carolina and Rhode Island are near full capacity.
