President Biden has announced that he is pardoning all prior federal convictions for simple marijuana possession.

Biden revealed his decision on Thursday. The Democrat said the move removes a burden on thousands of people who have been denied housing, employment and educational opportunities over their convictions.

Biden also instructed Attorney General Merrick Garland and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra to consider reclassifying marijuana. Marijuana is currently a schedule 1 drug. Other schedule 1 drugs include, heroin, LSD and fentanyl.

The president’s decision impacts around 6,500 people with federal cannabis convictions.
