Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) urged Joe Biden to directly appeal with congressional Democrats to raise the debt ceiling themselves. In a letter to Biden on Monday, McConnell warned Democrats were “sleepwalking” toward unavoidable danger because of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) months of inaction.
Schumer had the power to use reconciliation regarding the progress and Democrats didn’t need Republicans to act. McConnell said Republicans had no set of demands, but simply to maintain Democrats must handle the debt limit since they didn’t want to govern alone.
“First of all, I did get a letter. I got it 10 minutes before I walked into here. I’ve read it. I plan on talking to Mitch about it,” Biden stated. “He and I have been down this road once before, back when I was vice president and I hope we can have some intelligent and honest conversation about what he’s proposing.”

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Congress had until October 18 to avoid an unprecedented default, which could trigger an economic recession.
