Joe Biden’s eviction moratorium is set to expire this Saturday. In a statement on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden has called on Congress to extend the moratorium using the Delta variant as justification.
In addition, Biden has also asked the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Veterans Affairs to extend their moratoria until the end of September. This comes despite landlords across the U.S. saying the eviction moratorium is hurting their business and driving them deeper into debt.
Biden’s call to action also contradicts a recent Supreme Court ruling that advised against such an extension by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
I urge the Biden Administration to extend the CDC’s eviction moratorium. It is reckless not to extend the deadline when rental assistance funds have not gone out fast enough to protect people. Eviction filings have already spiked in anticipation of the moratorium being lifted.
