Since the return of the mask mandate on the House floor, a number of Republicans have refused the order and have decided to sue House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) over receiving fines. More than half a dozen GOP lawmakers refused to wear masks on the floor on Wednesday despite being warned the action could result in hefty fines.

In an attempt to stop the monetary penalties for choosing to breathe freely, a group of Republican elected officials announced a lawsuit against Pelosi. They argued the fines are a violation of the 27th Amendment, which states Congress shall not receive a pay increase or decrease during an ongoing session.

South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman (R) announced the suit at a press conference on Tuesday. He called Pelosi’s mandate an abuse of power and said now is the time to fight it.

Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie (R), who is also a plaintiff in the lawsuit, pointed out their purpose for fighting is to ensure more mandates and restrictions are not imposed by edict nationwide. While every representative who chose not to wear a mask on Wednesday only received a warning, their next offense would cost them $500 followed by $2,500 for any offense thereafter.
