Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) has recommended his state return to wearing masks after a surge in new COVID-19 cases. In a press conference on Friday, Edwards urged people regardless of being vaccinated to wear masks when indoors and when social distancing wasn’t possible.

This comes after Louisiana was deemed the state with the fastest growth in new COVID-19 cases per capita. Edwards warned of further restrictions if the situation within the state continued to intensify.

“Just this week alone, since Monday, including today’s announcements, we’ve added 16,898 positive cases of COVID,” Edwards explained. “We know that more than 8 percent of these are the Delta variant. That is what’s causing this surge.”

In addition, Louisiana public health officer Dr. Joe Kanter highlighted a surge in breakthrough cases of vaccinated individuals. He discussed the possibility of the fully vaccinated contracting COVID-19, but added symptoms have been less severe than those who haven’t received the vaccine.

Edwards also asked local businesses to review their operations and accommodate employees so they limit contact to people.
