The fencing around the Capitol has officially come down more than six months after the Jan. 6 protests. The fencing around the Capitol Building was finally dismantled on Sunday after House security announced the removal last week.
This decision comes after a new Capitol Police assessment showed its lowest threat level since earlier this year. Pedestrians complained the 8 foot tall fence interfered with foot and vehicle traffic as it at one point surrounded several blocks around Capitol Hill.
More than 40 GOP members of Congress signed a letter in February saying the barriers meant that the building was no longer the “People’s House.” The letter read, “it’s time for healing and it’s time for the removal of the fencing so the nation may move forward.”
Officials said there will not be another fence installed and all members of the public are welcome to walk around the area.
