House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has observed the holiday with a message that emphasized our freedoms as Americans. In a video released on Sunday, the Republican said Americans are free to pursue dreams, practice faith and live freely without an oppressive government.

The lawmaker also urged Americans to never take freedom for granted. He called on listeners to treasure and defend American freedom every single day.

“Despite the ill-faded efforts of the elites, we are free to live our lives without an oppressive government trying to control our every thought,” he expressed. “After the year we’ve all had, this Independence Day should hold special meaning. We can never take our freedoms for granted.”

McCarthy’s message comes as other GOP figure, such as RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have also wished Americans a happy holiday.
