Several Chicago city officials have called for an emergency meeting with Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) to demand she bring answers to the city’s rising crime rates.

According to reports, 19 Chicago council members recently demanded a meeting with Lightfoot after the mayor falsely asserted the city’s crime rates were declining. “All of our major indices show a decline in our crime, and our homicides and our shootings year over year are down,” said the mayor on Friday.

Local reports said there have been 200 more people shot this year in Chicago than last year. Additionally, the city has seen a 55 percent increase in homicides since 2020.

The group is criticizing Lightfoot’s previous efforts to combat crime and have stressed that residents “want answers.”
