A Virginia Tech football player is facing murder charges for allegedly killing a 40-year-old man. Isimemen Etute, 18, was arrested on Wednesday by Virginia’s Blacksburg Police Department in connection with the death of Jerry Smith.

Police were conducting a welfare check at Smith’s home in Blacksburg on Tuesday night when they found his body inside. Investigators ruled his death a homicide and later arrested Etute after identifying him as a person of interest.

He is currently being held in Montgomery County Jail without bail for the charge of second-degree murder. Etute is due in court come September.

Virginia Tech has since suspended the freshman from the football team. The university has told police that they will assist in the investigation and is currently offering resources for students who have been affected.
