Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill are joining the #FreeBritney movement after urging the House Judiciary Committee to conduct a hearing on court ordered conservatorships.
In a letter to the committee chair on Tuesday, congressmen Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) cited a growing public concern about the use of the legal practice. The representatives said conservatorships effectively deprive individuals of their personal freedoms such as pop sensation Britney Spears who has been under the control of her father since 2008.

Gaetz even suggested the so-called “princess of pop” should testify about her experiences before the House Committee.
“The power of Congress is not just to vote on stuff, it’s our power to convene around serious issues and this issue of conservatorship critical to so many people across the country,” stated the Florida representative. “I think we should hear directly from Britney Spears.”
Last month, the #FreeBritney movement saw one of its first victories when a Los Angeles probate judge ruled against her father, Jamie Spears, by establishing Bessemer Trust as a co-conservator of Britney’s estate.
