Dems forced to strike false evidence from record after Sen. Lee speaks up

House impeachment manager Jaime Raskin (D-Md.) said it’s “much ado about nothing” that the Democrats were caught trying to submit false evidence in the the trial.

On Wednesday, Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) attempted to introduce their “smoking gun” with a fierce emotional appeal.

“These attackers stood right where you are, they went on that rostrum, they rifled through your desks and they desecrated this place,” he stated. “And, literally, the President sat delighted doing nothing to help us, calling one of you to pressure you to stop the certification.”

The call he was describing was from President Trump who appeared to accidentally dial Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) while trying to reach Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.).

As Cicilline gave his speech on what apparently took place during that phone call, Lee grew visibly upset while ripping a piece of paper from his notepad and handing it to one of Trump’s attorneys. The senator finally stood up to say his piece.

“Statements were attributed to me moments ago by the House Impeachment Managers, statements relating to the content of conversations between a phone call involving President Trump and Senator Tuberville were not made by me,” said Lee. “They are not accurate and they are contrary to fact; I move pursuant to Rule 16 that they be stricken from the record. ”

After a quick mid-debate conference, impeachment manager Raskin had the evidence stricken, but did not concede its validity even after Lee’s on-the-record refutation. However, Raskin suggested the phone call could be resubmitted for debate moving forward in the trial.
