A 12-year-old girl from California was rescued by authorities after she was allegedly abducted by a former congressional candidate who ran for a Virginia delegate seat back in 2017.

In a press briefing over the weekend, the Fresno County Police Department announced that authorities detained 40-year-old Nathan Larson in connection with the kidnapping of a young girl he had met online. This came after law enforcement received a missing persons report that identified a 12-year-old girl heading to the Fresno Yosemite International Airport with an older man.

“Larson flew to Fresno from Virginia, then traveled to the girl’s home,” Sheriff Margaret Mims of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department explained. “He persuaded her to sneak out of her house at around two in the morning. He used a ride-share company to pick her up, and together they rode to the Fresno airport.”

According to police, the 12-year-old girl was forced to wear a disguise in order to avoid detection from airport security.

“Larson made her wear a long-haired wig to alter her appearance and make her look older,” Sheriff Mims went on to describe.

Police said Larson was discovered and arrested during a layover in Denver, Colorado. The girl was unharmed and reunited her with her family.

Larson previously gained national attention after he ran a failed congressional campaign back in 2017 where he advocated for the legalization of child pornography.

“In 2017, Larson ran for political office as an independent seeking to be a member of Virginia’s House of Delegates representing District 31,” the sheriff explained. “Part of his platform was to change the laws to allow incestual relationships and sex with minors.”

Officials said his actions were malicious and called the facts behind this case extremely disturbing.

“During the investigation, detectives uncovered that Nathan Larson has a deeply disturbing background,” Sheriff Mims said. “This is a man who runs a website which encourages the raping of children and sharing of naked photos and videos of children being raped.”

Larson is facing a misdemeanor charge of harboring a minor along with multiple federal charges, including kidnapping, child abduction, soliciting child pornography from a minor and meeting a child for the intention of sex. He’s scheduled to appear in court at an extradition hearing on December 24.
