Residents and staffers at nursing homes around the U.S. are beginning to receive their first round of the coronavirus vaccine.

On Friday, Walgreens and CVS Health Corp. announced they’ve started administering Pfizer’s vaccine to those living and working in long-term care facilities.

Officials in New York said nursing homes should expect to receive their first vaccine doses by Monday.

A nursing home in Connecticut has already begun to roll out the shots to its residents. They are calling the vaccine a “vial of hope.”

“Our residents have suffered greatly and our staff has felt the strain…in caring for residents during this pandemic [while] also taking care of themselves and their families,” Genesis Healthcare Chief Medical Officer Richard Feifer stated. “And some have gotten sick themselves, but these vials of hope have arrived.”

According to reports, Walgreens expects to vaccinate about three million residents and staff members across 35,000 nursing homes.

Roughly one week after the national rollout begins, both CVS Health Corp. and Walgreens plan to begin administering Moderna’s vaccine.
