President Trump is reportedly looking to have a special counsel continue the probe into Hunter Biden’s taxes.
According to an Associated Press report on Tuesday, the President discussed the matter with top White House officials, including White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.
President Trump was disappointed that outgoing U.S. Attorney General William Barr failed to publicly announce the two-year investigation into Hunter’s taxes.
The appointment of the special counsel would be up to the discretion of incoming acting U.S. Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen. Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers support President Trump’s desire for a special counsel.
Sen. Lindsey Graham told reporters it’s important Hunter’s taxes and shady business affairs with foreign governments be thoroughly investigated, especially if allegations of Joe Biden’s involvement are true.
“His business dealings have these emails about setting up an office and giving a key to Vice President Joe Biden and his uncle,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said. “I don’t know if that’s accurate or not, but…how far integrated into the Ukrainian economy did Hunter Biden get when he was on the board of Burisma?”
Graham added somebody needs to look at Hunter’s time on the board of Burisma as well as his business dealings regarding China.
In a statement earlier this week, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said that as a member of the Judiciary Committee, he will continue to investigate the Biden family’s ties to Ukraine and China, despite the liberal media’s efforts to delegitimize their findings.
“After Hunter Biden publicly confirmed he was under criminal investigation, liberal news outlets reported on concerns that his financial associations could create criminal financial and counterintelligence problems–something you heard from the Johnson-Grassley report several weeks ago,” Grassley stated. “That’s what we said in September 2020 and we were roundly criticized for it.”
While Republican leaders support the idea of taking a deeper look into the younger Biden, it’s unclear if the acting attorney general will cooperate even if President Trump decides a special counsel is appropriate.
However, if the counsel is approved it would be protected by federal law, which would make it difficult for any presidential administration to terminate.
