The Pennsylvania Department of Health is seeking additional federal aid to continue receiving medical support from the National Guard.

On Thursday, reports said the state is seeking an extension of ‘Title 32,’ the program that allows the National Guard to help long-term care facilities with medical needs. The program is authorized through the end of the year.

So far, the National Guard has been called to help out facilities in a handful of counties, with nurses and medics providing a total of 350,000 hours of assistance.

“Our nursing homes are stretched, they need the help,” Pennsylvania National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Albert Fogle said. “I’m here to tell you we’ve put in thousands of hours just in the last month and a half.”

State leaders said without an extension of ‘Title 32,’ they may have to put the National Guard on ‘State Active Duty.’ To date, there have been 248,000 coronavirus cases in Pennsylvania with around 9,200 deaths.
