The homicide rate in the nation’s capital is rising.
According to recent reports, the homicide rate in Washington D.C. has increased 18 percent from 2019 although overall crime rates have decreased.
In total, there have been 170 reported homicides in D.C. so far this year in comparison to just 144 in total for all of 2019.
Community leaders in DC said the effects of the ongoing pandemic and social unrest have made it difficult to mediate the conflict.
“In the same way we have a vision zero plan for pedestrian fatalities we got to have a vision zero plan around homicides in our city,” No Murders D.C. founder David Bowers said.
Along with the increase in homicides, aggravated assaults have also reportedly increased by 14 percent in 2020.
