The governor of Kansas has announced a recent surge in coronavirus cases across the Sunflower State. On Monday, Governor Laura Kelly confirmed the state added more than 1,500 cases this past weekend. She has called the new clusters a “trend in the wrong direction.”

According to her, the rise in cases was caused by student gatherings at universities. Over the weekend, the University of Kansas issued cease and desist orders to two fraternities.

This came after footage of students in large groups went viral. They were reportedly not wearing masks or practicing social distancing.

“Our positive infection rate from this weekend continues an alarming trend in the wrong direction for Kansas,” stated Kelly. “To make matters worse, as college students returned to campus, we’ve experienced a rise in clusters, stemming from mass gatherings at six of our universities in Kansas and at one fraternity.”

The governor also recommended delaying certain sports ahead of the fall semester, including football and other high contact sports.

Currently, every county in Kansas has seen least one reported coronavirus case.
