Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order that will require all residents to wear a face mask in public indoor spaces and crowded outdoor spaces. On Friday, she stated masks reduce the chance of spreading COVID-19 by about 70% and can save lives.
Today, I signed executive order 2020-147, which requires the use of face coverings in crowded outdoor spaces. The order also requires any business that is open to the public to refuse entry or service to people who refuse to wear a face covering, with limited exceptions. pic.twitter.com/ivf1IpYjZ1

She added the heroes on the front lines of the pandemic wear masks every day and suggested residents owe it to them to do the same.
By wearing masks, we can save lives and protect our family, friends, and neighbors from the spread of COVID-19. And by wearing masks now, we can put our state in a stronger position so our kids can return to school safely in the fall. Let’s #maskupmichigan

The governor has advised residents to wear a face covering since she first announced stay-at-home orders earlier this year.
“I encourage everyone to wear some sort of a face covering in those few trips you need to leave the house,” said Whitmer.
The new order will go into effect on Monday and will allow businesses to turn away anyone who is not wearing a face covering. Michigan residents who do not obey the order can be fined up to $500.
I don’t care what’s on your mask. I just care that it’s on your face. ????????♀️ https://t.co/MezW4XBagg
