Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said the state could dial back reopening if the number of new COVID-19 cases continues to rise. She made the comment in an interview Tuesday as the state boosts its efforts to stop the spread of the virus.
Whitmer said thousands of lives have been saved because of the state’s actions and she would hate to see the sacrifices be made in vein because people are letting their guard down. She urged residents to wear a face mask and said now is the time to double down on the fight against the virus.
“We’re are going to continue to monitor the numbers…if they keep moving up, we’re gonna dial back if we have to and it’s the last thing that any of us wants,” stated the governor. “I gotta tell you, I want to reengage this economy more than anyone, but I’m not going to do it if it is too risky to do so.”
After recent COVID-19 outbreaks tied to bars, we had to take action to slow the spread & keep people safe. If we want to be in a strong position to reopen schools for this fall, we must take aggressive action now to ensure we don’t wipe out all the progress we have made.

Most of Michigan is in phase four of its “safe start plan.” Whitmer wanted the state to move into phase five by the Fourth of July, but held back because of the rise in new cases.
