According to the Centers for Disease Control, the true number of Americans who have been infected with coronavirus is more than 20 million. During Thursday’s press briefing, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield confirmed there are actually 10 other infections for every case reported.
“This virus causes so much asymptomatic infection,” he said. “We probably recognized about 10 percent of the outbreak.”
This estimate was based on serology testing, which has been used to determine antibodies present and indicate whether the individual has had the virus. These results suggested the percentage of U.S. deaths from the disease could be much lower than reported.
Currently, 2.4 million cases have been reported nationwide. Researchers believe the coronavirus death toll will reach 180,000 by October if people don’t start wearing masks.
According to an updated projection, the number of deaths from the virus could be reduced by 33,000 if at least 95% of Americans begin wearing face coverings while in public.
Experts claimed “wearing masks can reduce transmission of the virus by as much as 50%” and added that refusing to take up the simple measure can put many lives in danger.
The highest number of daily coronavirus cases in the U.S. was reported on Wednesday at 36,000.
