In a video released by Variety, rock legend Elton John called former President Donald Trump’s moniker for Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, “hilarious.”

In the video, the Variety journalist had clearly attempted to bait Elton into making damaging statements about the former GOP president, however, it ironically backfired.

“When he did that, I just thought it was hilarious,” John said in the video that was posted on Sunday, referring to Trump calling the North Korean leader “Rocket Man” or “Little Rocket Man.”

“It made me laugh,” he added.

The connection between the former president and Kim has been complex in recent years. In a 2015 GOP debate, the former president called Kim a “maniac,” but in a 2022 audiobook, he told journalist Bob Woodward that the two surprisingly had “good chemistry” once they met in person.

“Donald’s always been a fan of mine, and he’s been to my concerts many, many times,” Elton John said in the Variety video. “So, I mean, [I’ve] always been friendly towards him… I thank him for his support.”

In September 2022, John performed in the White House during Joe Biden’s presidency, and Biden even awarded him a National Humanities Medal. However, Elton still refrained from making a clear stance on his ideal choice in the upcoming U.S election in the recent interview.

“America is in a very volatile position at the moment. And it’s a country I love, and I’ve always loved, and I’m so thankful that it made me who I am,” he said.

“So, I just want people to vote for things that are just, things … important to people: the right to choose, the right to be who you are, and not let anybody else tell you who to be. And that goes … all the way up to the Supreme Court.”
