Salt Lake City, Utah, will once again take on the role as an Olympics host after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally awarded the 2034 Winter Games to the United States’ bid on Wednesday.

The capital city of Utah was the considered candidate after the IOC gave Salt Lake City the exclusive negotiating rights last year.

The campaign team presenting the bid on stage to IOC members included GOP Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Democrat Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, and Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn.

“I don’t know what the environment will be like from a political perspective or the global state of peace,” Vonn stated. “But I really have high hopes for how we can come together in Salt Lake. It’s going to be amazing.”

Salt Lake City last hosted the games back in 2002, and the city has kept the Olympic enthusiasm alive for over two decades.

During its final presentation to the Olympic committee on Wednesday morning, the Salt Lake City bid team proposed one of the closest venue layouts in Olympic history, with all events within a one-hour drive of the athletes’ village on the University of Utah campus.

Additionally, the plan does not require any new permanent construction, with all 13 venues already in place. Each venue was used when the city first hosted in 2002.
