AT&T revealed Friday that a cyberattack breached the data of “nearly all” of its cellular customers and downloaded it to a third-party cloud platform.

The telecom giant has “taken steps” to close off the illegal access point and is working with law enforcement to track down the hackers. At least one person has already been apprehended, AT&T said.
“At this time, we do not believe that the data is publicly available,” AT&T said in a statement.
The data included records of phone calls and texts of cellular customers, wireless network customers and landline customers who interacted with cellular customers all between May 2022 and October 2022. The stolen data also includes a small number of customer records from January 2, 2023.
The hacker did not access any personal information such as Social Security numbers or dates of birth. Additionally, the stolen data also does not include timestamps, so the hackers can see which users interacted and how many times, but not when they interacted.
According to AT&T, they said there are often ways to find the name associated with a specific telephone number through certain publicly available online tools.
The company also stated that it had launched an investigation into the incident and has “engaged leading cybersecurity experts to understand the nature and scope of the criminal activity.”
Meanwhile, the company is continuing to work with law enforcement to arrest others involved.
The latest incident comes after the company discovered a data breach in March, which exposed 73 million current and former accounts on the dark web.
AT&T also had back-to-back service issues, a broad network outage in February that lasted about 10 hours, followed by another incident in June.
