Republicans in Iowa’s House of Representatives have approved a bill criminalizing the death of an “unborn person.”

After an Alabama court determined that frozen embryos can be regarded as children, the Iowa House approved a bill on Thursday that would make the death of an “unborn person” a crime.
The proposed bill would change the language in Iowa’s current law to address “causing of death of, or serious injury to, an unborn person,” which is defined as “an individual organism… from fertilization to live birth.”
Currently, the law outlines penalties for termination or serious injury to a “human pregnancy.”
It’s one of several bills that state legislatures across the nation are debating that would increase the legal and constitutional safeguards for fetuses and embryos, a long-standing objective of the pro-life movement.
To become law, the bill would still need to be approved by the state Senate and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds.
