Several county executives in New York have called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recently updated guidance on face masks.

In a joint statement released on Sunday, six executives urged Cuomo to implement federal guidelines which would ease rules for those who have been fully vaccinated.

“New York needs to follow the science-backed guidance of the CDC,” the officials said. “As we continue to see active cases, hospitalizations and deaths steadily dropping day by day and more people receiving vaccinations, the Governor should implement the CDC’s common sense guidance.”

Since the CDC’s announcement, many states have altered their COVID-19 rules to fit the new guidance that was announced last week. Yet, New York is still abiding by mask-wearing rules that were first introduced in April 2020.

Cuomo said he is still urging New Yorkers to keep masks on and is further reviewing the CDC’s new guidelines before deciding whether to change his mind.
