President Trump is praising the newly elected chairman of the Republican Party in Texas. On Twitter Monday, he congratulated former congressman and retired Lt. Col. Allen West for his hard fought victory.

Allen unseated James Dickey during a virtual convention with the final vote cast early Monday. He has committed to keeping Texas red ahead of November’s election.

“Now is a critical time in Texas, it’s a line in the sand moment,” said West. “When I think about an organization called Red Guard Austin, a communist group, is going around spray painting, hammers and sickles all over our capitol…Austin, Texas here is our call to arms…do not be discouraged, do not be dismayed.”

Allen’s victory follows a virtual convention because of a last minute ruling banning the delegates from meeting in-person due to concerns surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
