The New York tri-state area will soon require travelers from states with high COVID-19 infection rates to submit to a mandatory two week quarantine. The directive was first announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo during Wednesday’s joint press conference with the governors of Connecticut and New Jersey.
“People coming in from states that have a high infection rate will be subject to the quarantine,” he stated.
The new advisory will apply to all travelers arriving from states that have infection rates exceeding 10 cases per 100,000 people over a one week period. This would include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North and South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas.
NY, NJ and CT will continually update and publish on their respective websites a list of states to which the new advisory applies.
As of today, the list of states includes: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Utah & Washington. https://t.co/do5hy6UyUY

According to Cuomo, if the infection rates in those states drop below the threshold, the quarantine order will be lifted for those states.
New York was once considered the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States. However, its infection levels have since dropped to the lowest in the nation, followed closely by New Jersey.
Today’s update on the numbers:
51,144 tests were performed yesterday. 581 tests came back positive (1.1% of total).
Total hospitalizations fell to 1,071.

It’s still unclear how the advisory will be enforced, but the governor has suggested there could be a possible fine for those caught violating the order.
The order is set to take effect at midnight on Thursday, local time.
