On Sunday, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. will send Israel an advanced anti-missile system, along with some 100 American troops to operate it.

The Pentagon stated that the intention was “to help bolster Israel’s air defenses following Iran’s unprecedented attacks against Israel on April 13 and again on October 1.”
The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system has been deployed to Israel in the past, noted Pentagon press secretary, Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder. However, the deployment of American troops into Israel marks a new development as Israel and Iran, along with its proxies, trade blows, stoking fears of an all out regional war.
The THAAD system is meant to bolster Israel’s missile defense system and is meant for anti-ballistic missile defense as Iran has previously attempted to overwhelm Israel’s defense systems amidst escalatory chain reactions.
“The THAAD Battery will augment Israel’s integrated air defense system. This action underscores the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran,” Ryder stated.
“It is part of the broader adjustments the U.S. military has made in recent months, to support the defense of Israel and protect Americans from attacks by Iran and Iranian-aligned militias,” Ryder added.
Additionally, the United States has recently increased its presence in the region, deploying additional warships and aircraft carriers.
