A new Biden administration official has been criticized for past social media posts that compared police to “slave patrols,” as well as posts that voiced anti-Israel sentiments and condemnation towards U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Abolish ICE,” reads a tweet on January 17th, 2018.

“In 1704, the colony of Carolina developed the nation’s first slave patrol. Slave patrols helped to maintain the economic order and to assist the wealthy landowners in recovering and punishing slaves who essentially were considered property,” according to Eastern Kentucky University.

Department of Interior employee Tyler Cherry’s critical tweets began to surface shortly after he was promoted last week to join the White House communications team.

Cherry, who spent three years working under Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, wrote in 2015 following the death of Freddie Gray, a Black man who died while in police custody, saying that he was: “Praying for #Baltimore, but praying even harder for an end to a capitalistic police state motivated by explicit and implicit racial biases.”

Months later in another post on X (Twitter), he wrote: “Time to recall that the modern day police system is a direct evolution of slave patrols and lynch mobs,” according to Fox News Digital.

Additionally, several other tweets that Cherry posted in 2014 applauded the pro-Palestine movement, which included one where he wrote, “Cheersing in bars to ending the occupation of Palestine – no shame and f— your glares #ISupportGaza #FreePalestine.”

Other posts in the past by Cherry also accused Republicans of being too focused on what he referred to as “White grievance politics.”

In response to the recent backlash, Cherry addressed his old social media posts on X (Twitter) on Sunday, writing: “Past social media posts from when I was younger do not reflect my current views. Period.”

“I support this Administration’s agenda – and will continue my communications work focused on our climate and environmental policies,” he added.

Additionally, the White House defended hiring Cherry in a statement to Fox News, with White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates telling the network: “We’re very proud to have Tyler on the team.”
