Senate Republicans warn the nearly $2 trillion Build Back Better Act would be harmful for the economy.
During a press conference on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven (R) said Democrats were taking the wrong approach and called the legislation a gimmick.
“This is absolutely the wrong way to go. People need to understand exactly what’s in this bill, understand these gimmicks and know this is not what we need for our economy and our country. We need to get back to them pro-growth policies,” said Hoeven.
Hoeven also said Democrat policies are discouraging people from going back into the work force. Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford (R) also called out the White House, accusing the Biden administration of repeatedly changing the intent of the bill.

“This massive bill that’s sitting out there that is now almost $2 trillion, with around $400 billion in additional debt, originally was all about sustaining our economy, then this very hot inflation continues to rise and now suddenly it is, well this is going to help us fight inflation. And now we’re dealing with unemployment issues and then the Democrats’ line changed to, oh well now it’s going to help with employment issues. In reality, what’s happening is they’re trying to spend more and tax more, and they’re going to make it even worse,” said Sen. Lankford (R-Okla.).
Lankford warned the legislation would discourage companies from investing and basing operations in the U.S. in the future. This comes as the administration has claimed the bill is completely paid for despite a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report that found it would increase the national debt by $160 billion over the next decade.
“Instead of addressing the problems Americans are so concerned about, Democrats are doubling down with bad ideas and then forcing Americans to pay for those bad ideas. Inflation, labor, supply chain, open borders, all of these things are so so very important to the American people and yet nothing is being done abut them. This is what working families in America are concerned about,” stressed Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.).
Meanwhile, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is aiming to pass the legislation by Christmas.
