A fallen police deputy is laid to rest in Texas after he was killed in an ambush attack. A funeral service was held for 30-year-old Deputy Kareem Atkins in Houston on Monday.
Atkins was fatally shot in an ambush outside a club on the morning of Oct. 16. Two other deputies were struck during the incident and taken to the hospital for serious injuries.
Harris County Precinct Four Constable Mark Herman said Atkins was a rock his colleagues leaned on.
“I routinely saw his coworkers going to him for guidance and mentorship,” said Constable Mark Herman. “Part of the reason everyone loved Kareem was despite his young age, he was someone you could always count on to be calm, cool and collected in most, and really mature, in most chaotic situations. He had a unique strength about him. He was the rock that we all leaned on.”
Atkins is survived by his wife and six-month-old baby.
The HPD Honor Guard & Command Staff were honored to pay respects to fallen @Pct4Constable Deputy Constable Kareem Anthony Atkins.
Our continued prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow deputies. #RIPDeputyAtkins pic.twitter.com/vvTQq3AK49
