Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has called for a special legislative session to ban federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates in his state.
During a press conference in Clearwater on Thursday, DeSantis said the federal government is trying to force the jab, while he maintains the belief in having basic medical freedom and individual choice.
The governor made it known he plans on taking aggressive legal action to ban any federal mandates. DeSantis also said himself and the attorney general will be contesting the federal mandate in court.
The Republican said they’ll be taking legislative action to add protections for people in the Sunshine State, adding it’s “something that cannot wait,” and the legislature is being called back for a special session.
“When we were doing the last legislative session, it would never have occurred to me that we would be in the situation that we are with some of the insanity that’s raining down right now,” said DeSantis. “We took very strong action against things like vaccine passports, that was the right decision to do.”

DeSantis noted not all the blame can be put toward the government, and that he will also be taking additional action with businesses who turned on their employees and ignored religious exemptions. He said Florida provided probably the strongest coronavirus liability protection for businesses in the country very early on.
“To now see some of those businesses who were complaining about potential liability turn around and want to fire employees over these injections, I kind of feel like they’re stabbing us in the back after we were standing up for them. And so, we’re going to be pursuing a number of protections for employees.”
The Republican governor highlighted the mandate poses a potential threat to thousands of Floridians and said someone’s got to stand up for people’s jobs, livelihoods and constitutional freedoms.
