President Trump said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) “made a big mistake” in allowing Democrats to pass a short-term debt ceiling hike. During an interview on Thursday, Trump said McConnell gave Democrats time to figure out what they were going to do on the debt ceiling when they were in a “big bind.”

McConnell and 10 other Republicans joined Democrats to overcome a filibuster regarding the debt ceiling extension. Trump contended the Kentucky lawmaker needed to be replaced as Senate GOP leader.

“The Republican Senate needs new leadership. I’ve been saying it for a long time. Mitch is not the guy. He’s not the right guy. He’s not doing the job. He gave them a life line. It’s more than life line. He gave them so much time now to figure out what to do because they were in a real big bind. They wouldn’t have been able to do anything.”

Trump also touched on the Afghanistan withdrawal, in which he said it may be the single most embarrassing thing to happen in U.S. history.
