Joe Biden has warned the public of a new and potentially deadlier coronavirus variant in an effort to increase vaccinations. On Friday, Biden touted his administration’s vaccination rate, but said coronavirus still “remains a serious and deadly threat.”

The nation has been expected to fall short of the Biden administration’s goal to have 160 million Americans fully vaccinated by July 4. Biden insisted vaccinations can curb the danger of new variants.

“The best way to protect yourself against these variants are to get fully vaccinated,” he claimed. “If you haven’t gotten vaccinated yet, get vaccinated now, now. Don’t put it off.”

Biden went on to claim young individuals are particularly at risk for the new delta variant, which he also stated is more contagious than other strains. Center for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky expressed her expectations for the variant to spread and dominate other strains over the next few months.

Biden’s speech comes as many states have started to make progress in lifting lockdown mandates.
