House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Joe Biden is giving an economic advantage to Russia by waiving sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. In a letter to Biden, McCarthy and his Republican colleagues said the completion of Nord Stream 2 would hurt the U.S. economy and national security.
McCarthy said Biden gave a “gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin by waiving pipeline sanctions. He added that due to Biden’s decision Russia will be able to sell more gas to Europe at a cheaper price, which will reduce U.S. exports and cost thousands of American jobs.
Dear Mr. President:
Given your open hostility to domestic pipelines like the Keystone XL pipeline, it is baffling that you are willing to green-light Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
Put simply, you are prioritizing Russian jobs over American jobs. pic.twitter.com/uqRhyQqGLV

McCarthy and lawmakers alike agree that Biden’s decision is irresponsible. “Given your open hospitality to domestic pipelines like the Keystone XL pipeline, which also was a top priority for our Canadian allies, it is baffling that you are willing to green-light Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline,” the lawmakers added.
“The Keystone XL pipeline would enhance our energy security and create job opportunities for Americans.” Further, he suggested that by lifting the sanctions, all Biden is doing is prioritizing Russian jobs over American jobs.
In the meantime, McCarthy is urging Biden to rethink his action and to “fully implement the Congressionally mandated sanctions against all responsible parties and actors to permanently stop completion of Nord Stream 2.”
