Matt Walsh from the conservative news outlet Daily Wire, recently put together a fundraiser in efforts to help save the home of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) grandmother in Puerto Rico after photos surfaced of her living conditions. Walsh took aim at Ocasio-Cortez on Friday for virtue signaling in a tweet about her grandmother’s home. On Thursday, the progressive lawmaker took to Twitter to blame President Donald Trump for her grandmother’s home falling into disrepair following Hurricane Maria.
Just over a week ago, my abuela fell ill. I went to Puerto Rico to see her- my 1st time in a year+ bc of COVID.
This is her home. Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR.

On his talk show, Walsh questioned why Ocasio-Cortez was not reaching into her own pockets to help. Critics also pointed out how she drives a luxury car and has two apartments, but somehow can’t offer any assistance to her own family. Yet, when she responded she said she was not just focusing on her grandmother, but the “systemic injustices”.
Walsh turned to a popular crowdfunding site to raise money for Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother. The GoFundMe dubbed “Save AOC’s Abuela’s Ancestral Home”, had a goal of raising nearly $49,000. Walsh kicked off the donations with a contribution of $499 himself, with other names in conservative news like Ben Shapiro joining in.
As you’ve heard, @AOC’s abuela is living in a dilapidated home that was ravaged by Hurricane Maria. AOC is unable to help her own grandma for whatever reason, so I have set up this Go Fund Me campaign to save her home. Please give if you can. #HelpAbuela https://t.co/F1N0Jxgnxg

However, though the fund raised over $100,000 to restore the home, Walsh said an unknown person in the family has refused the money. He said the site will be offering a refund to all those who donated, but said tragically, the charitable efforts were sabotaged by forces outside of his control.
Walsh extended his gratitude to those who donated, saying they should be proud of their efforts and went on to suggest prayers for Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother.
